Parade spectators rude

SHARE Parade spectators rude

I am a member of the West High School marching band. I recently had the opportunity to march in the parade in Riverton on July 3, followed by the Murray Fun Days Parade on the Fourth of July.

Quite frankly, I was appalled at the behavior of some of the spectators. While marching, I heard many rude comments such as "Get out of the parade!" and others such as "Nice uniforms," spoken quite sarcastically.

I will be the first to admit that our band is small (we march with approximately 20 musicians).

However, from the just-graduated seniors to the incoming freshmen, every one of the musicians in our band is committed to building the school's music program — committed enough to march in a 20-piece band. That kind of commitment deserves more respect than was displayed by the catcalls we received.

I offer a "thank you" to Laun Maher, our director, for being generous enough to spend a good part of his summer with us; to all of the members of the band willing to march in temperatures near 100 degrees; and to all of the spectators willing to offer the band members the respect they have earned.

Finally, I hope you will remember this letter when you see us (or any other marching bands) in subsequent parades.
