Consensual sex? No way

Shame on DeShawn Stevenson. What a horrible deed if in fact the allegations are true.

Shame also on the Deseret News. To report that these 14- and 15-year-old girls consented to what transpired is to be totally naive as to what went on. Has the world ripened so much in its wickedness in accepting extramarital sex that we can even consider that a 14-year-old can consent to having sex with a 20-year-old?

Why is this act (statutory rape) even on the books as a crime? It is because the 20-year-old has so much power over the 14-year-old as to render an individual of this age powerless to resist anything asked of her. The fear, the control, the absolute not wanting to lose the acceptance of the older individual renders the minor incapable of resisting. The adult then misinterprets assent as consent, when in fact it is not there.

Sure, the minor may claim consent at first, but as she matures either through psychological counseling or through the acquisition of years, she comes to see that she was forced just as much as any other rape victim. Someone years ago understood this and enacted a law making such an act a felony.

Somehow you seem to try to lessen the offense by stating consent. This is wrong, just wrong.
