George McGovern, the former senator and presidential candidate, will lose his job at the United Nations when President Bush makes his own appointment to the post.

McGovern, appointed to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization in 1998 by President Clinton, said he was grateful to have stayed this long after the election. "Of course, I understand how the system works for presidential appointees," the 78-year-old Democrat said.

The U.N. agency works to raise nutrition standards in rural areas.
