WASHINGTON (AP) — Krups North America is recalling about 218,000 automatic drip coffeemakers because an electrical problem could start fires.

The company, based in Closter, N.J., has received 37 reports of the coffeemakers overheating, including 12 reports of fire and smoke damage to cabinets and countertops, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said last week. No injuries have been reported.

The recalled 10-cup coffeemakers are models 398 with a black or white exterior and 405 with a simulated wood-grain exterior. The model numbers are on the bottom of the coffeemaker.

Stores nationwide sold the coffee makers from January 1996 through April 2000 for about $95.

The commission advises consumers to unplug and stop using the coffeemakers immediately and contact Krups toll-free at 1-800-810-8687 for a free replacement.
