SAN FRANCISCO — Mayor Willie Brown gave a radio interview last week that lifted some eyebrows.

For years, he has been saying that his last day as mayor will be his last day in politics and that he will take up some other line of work, perhaps some do-good stuff with a nonprofit foundation.

There are doubters, of course, who remember him from the days when he was the leader of the California Assembly, arguably the most powerful legislator in the United States, and they suggest that Brown never carried his political heart to San Francisco, that he left it back in Sacramento.

Maybe so. Last Tuesday, Brown told KGO radio that he might run for the state Senate. "I've never said it before," he said, "but it's a possibility."
