BETHLEHEM, Ind. (AP) — A small boat collided with a tow of barges on the Ohio River, and five people were missing, officials said.
The collision happened about 5:15 a.m. Sunday, when a towboat crew pushing 15 barges heard someone on the river yelling for help, said Lt. Steve Garcia, a Coast Guard spokesman.
About 90 minutes later searchers recovered some seats from a boat, a cooler, fish bait, a baseball cap and a broken oar, Indiana Department of Natural Resources conservation officer Mac Spainhour said. The seats resembled those normally found on a 16- to 17-foot-long runabout, Spainhour said.
