AUBURN, Wash. (AP) — A speeding car jumped a curb, then crashed into a support pillar, killing six young people and critically injuring another.
Relatives told investigators all seven had been drinking at a party in this Seattle suburb shortly before the crash Monday night, police Cmdr. Bob Karnofski said. The odor of alcohol was noticeable in the wreckage, he said.
The Ford Escort in which the seven were riding veered to the left, hit a curb, sailed into the median and slammed into a support pillar for an elevated roadway that leads to the SuperMall of the Great Northwest. Five people were thrown from the car.
"It was pretty gruesome," Karnofski said. He didn't know how fast the car was going but said it was speeding.
Names of the victims were being withheld Tuesday.
