Officers were led to an apartment where they discovered the body of a man Friday night. And later that night, the officers found and arrested a man in connection with the killing.
About 9 p.m. Friday police received a call from a woman who said a man had contacted her after reportedly killing someone.
The woman didn't know the address of the apartment where the slaying occurred but gave a police officer a description of the building.
Because the officer had been to the apartments, 432 E. Chapman (225 South), many times before, he recognized the caller's description of the building, Salt Lake Police Lt. Terry Morgan said.
The officer was then able to locate a unit inside the apartment building where police found the victim lying on the front room floor, Morgan said.
About 11:30 p.m., shortly after police located the body of 57-year-old Robert Young, they found the man, who the caller said committed the crime, walking down 400 East, Morgan said.
Greg Velasquez, 24, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of criminal homicide.
Morgan said an autopsy would determine how the man died. There were no obvious stab or gunshot wounds, she said.
The victim and the man police arrested were reportedly cordial, Morgan said, so it didn't look like the motive was robbery.
