SWIMMING/DIVING: The University of Utah had six men and six women from its swimming and diving team named to the 2001 Mountain West Conference Academic All-Conference team.
Qualifiers for the men's team were: Brandon Durrant, Daniel Godfrey, Paul Hellinga, Magnus Lofgren, Trenton Shino and James Thompson.
The women's qualifiers were: Melissa Chamberlin, Rebecca Gerber, Kimberly Lewis, Jill Lish-Comins, Amber Nye and Jamie Wayman.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better and be a starter or significant contributor to the team.

BASEBALL: Utah Valley State College baseball coach Steve Gardner has signed a host of local prep stars to bolster next season's roster.
Three strong-armed pitchers lead the list of recruits — Matt Jensen, a right-hander out of Lone Peak led his team to the 4A state title, right-hander Jason Ward from Spanish Fork and Timpanogos High southpaw Eric King.
Gardner also singed five local position players in infielders Gabe Adams (Timpanogos), Kevin Hashimoto (Box Elder) and Troy Badger (Timpview), and outfielders Caleb Young (Lone Peak) and Travis Gillespie (Mountain View).
UVSC also inked two out-of-state prospects in shortstop Eli Slesk out of Meridian High (Wash.) and pitcher Andy Coats out of Minico High (Idaho).
