A short flight off a tall pier

SHARE A short flight off a tall pier

Dick Chitolie of London launches himself from Bognor Regis Pier in Sussex, England, on the back of a 10-foot dragonfly for the annual Bird Man of Bognor competition Sunday. Thirty contestants took a flying leap off the pier in hang-gliders, motorless biplanes, a Mary Poppins costume and a chicken suit. They were competing for the title of Bognor Birdman, bestowed on the winner of a venerable, eccentric British summer tradition. A $35,000 prize goes to anyone able to fly more than 100 meters, or 328 feet, under their own power. But the wind proved too strong for any record flying attempts at this year's contest. Chitolie only managed to fly 5 yards.
