OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — A 12-year-old boy who was pulled by beachgoers from a sand dune that collapsed on top of him has died.

Michael Newell of Cameron Park had been playing with a friend Friday around the dunes near Dillon Beach, about 60 miles northwest of San Francisco.

Newell was inside a hole they had dug in the dune when it collapsed, said Capt. Ken Carter of the Marin County Fire Department.

"He was completely buried for five to six minutes," paramedic Ron Alves said.
