BLUFFDALE/FREMONT, UT-<! > Matthew Erval "Matt" Behunin, age 93, passed away July 20, 2001 in Payson, Utah at the home of a daughter, of causes incident to age.

He was born December 29, 1907 in Torrey, Utah, the third of 13 children born to Isaac Martin and Julia Ellen Cook Behunin. He was raised in Torrey and when he was five years old, the family moved up to Fremont. He attended elementary school in Fremont, which was the only formal education he was privileged to have. He helped his father with farm work and helped take care of his younger brothers and sisters. On May 11, 1933 he married Thelma Elizabeth Taylor in Richfield, Utah. Their marriage was solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple April 26, 1936. Matt was a sheepherder and a farmer.

In 1944 he moved his family to Weiser, Idaho, where he had dairy cows and worked cleaning out boilers of freight trains. He returned to Fremont in 1946, where he again operated a farm and also worked in a uranium mine and was an inspector of seed potatoes for Wayne, Piute and Sevier Counties. He and Thelma raised six children, four boys and two girls. In 1969, Matt and Thelma moved to Bluffdale, where he found employment with Webb Brothers Dairy.

Matt served as Bishop of Fremont Ward from 1949 to 1953. He also served as a counselor to another Bishop. He served as Sunday School Superintendent, Stake Senior Aaronic Priesthood Committee, ward and stake YMMIA, presidency of high priest quorums, stake and ward drama director and a home teacher. Matt and Thelma served a mission for the LDS Church to Ireland and Arizona in 1978 and 1979. Matt was a Temple Ordinance Worker at the Jordan River Temple for 14 and a half years. He loved to go deer hunting with his sons and son-in-law and he enjoyed father and son outings. He raised a large garden and was always eager to share the produce with family, neighbors and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma; children: Barbara (James) Aitken of Payson; Dean (Myrna) Behunin of South Jordan, currently serving a mission in Thailand; Albert (Donna) Behunin of Kearms; Orval (Dorothy) Behunin of Idaho Falls, ID; Darrell (Mary) Behunin of Shelly, ID; Bonnie Jean (Kelby) Davis of Hyrum; 30 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchil-dren, with five more on the way; three great-great-grandchildren; one brother: Leland Behunin of Hurricane; one sister: Lila Miller of Citrus Heights, CA. He was preceded in death by seven sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 26, 2001 at 12 noon in the Bluffdale 4th LDS Ward Chapel, located at 14400 South 1700 West in Bluffdale, where friends may call for veiwng Wednesday evening from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday morning from 10:30-11:30 prior to the services. Additional viewing will be held Friday, July 27, 2001 in the Fremont LDS Ward Chapel in Fremont, Utah, from 11-12 noon. Graveside services and burial will be Friday at 12:30 p.m. in the Fremont Cemetery.
