SHARE Harvard professor named honorary citizen of Benin

Harvard University professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. was awarded an honorary citizenship by Mathieu Kerekou, the president of the West African country of Benin.

Gates is the head of Afro-American Studies at Harvard. In 1997, he was named one of Time magazine's "25 Most Influential Americans."

In Benin, he was recognized for his contributions to the Encarta Africana CD-ROM and the African Encyclopedia.
