KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) — A man suspected of killing his wife and kidnapping his daughter took a boat captain hostage and demanded to be taken to Cuba but was shot by a police sniper after he fired at officers from the vessel, police said.
Alexis Quevedo, 34, fired at officers on shore after the engine of the boat he hijacked overheated Tuesday, Key West police said. He was hit in the chest when a sniper returned fire.
Quevedo was initially taken to Lower Florida Keys Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, said Nancy Rogan, a nursing supervisor. He was later airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center in Miami. No one else was injured, police said.
Police said Quevedo is suspected of killing his wife, Elizabeth Vega, on Monday and kidnapping his 4-year-old daughter. Police later found the girl at a family friend's house.
