FLORIDA FRESHMAN DIES: Incoming Florida freshman Eraste Autin died of complications related to heat stroke six days after collapsing and falling into a coma following a workout with teammates.

Autin fell unconscious just outside Florida Field last Thursday while jogging back to the locker room after one of the football team's voluntary summer conditioning sessions.

CANADIAN PGA WOMEN: Lorie Kane won her fifth Canadian PGA women's championship, shooting a tournament-record 9-under 63 for a 10-stroke victory in Hamilton, Ontario.

Kane is a four-time winner on the LPGA Tour. A.J. Eathorne shot a 72 to finish second.

MERCEDES-BENZ CUP: Pete Sampras beat defending champion Michael Chang 7-6 (6), 7-6 (2) in second-round action at the Mercedes-Benz Cup in Los Angeles.

In first round matches, top-seeded Gustavo Kuerten eliminated Michael Llodra 7-6 (4), 6-3; Taylor Dent upset sixth-seeded Carlos Moya of Spain 6-3, 6-4; and Max Mirnyi of Belarus eliminated Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands. In a second-round match, seventh-seeded Magnus Norman of Sweden beat Cyril Saulnier of France 6-4, 7-6 (4).

WEST CLASSIC: Monica Seles beat Meilen Tu to advance to the quarterfinals of the Bank of the West Classic, 7-6 (2), 6-2 at Stanford, Calif.

Lindsay Davenport easily took care of Italian Rita Grande 6-3, 6-2, in her second-round match.

GENERALI OPEN: Defending champion Alex Corretja of Spain was upset in the $900,000 Generali Open clay court tournament, losing to Stefan Koubek of Austria 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the second round at Kitzbuehel, Austria.

Second-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov reached the third round by defeating Austrian wild card entry Oliver Marach 7-6 (1), 5-7, 6-4.

PROKOM OPEN: Irakli Labadze of Georgia came back to beat fifth-seeded Mikhail Youzhny 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 at the Prokom Open in Sopot, Poland, to reach the quarterfinals of an ATP event for the first time. In other second-round matches, third-seeded Tommy Robredo defeated fellow Spaniard Carlos Cuadrado 6-0, 6-1, while Oscar Serrano of Spain eliminated Federico Luzzi of Italy 7-6 (3), 6-4.

In women's action, Tatiana Poutchek of Belarus beat seventh-seeded Lina Krasnoroutskaya of Russia 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. Third-seeded Jelena Dokic needed less than an hour to top Kveta Hrdlickova 6-3, 6-2.

Dokic next faces eighth-seeded Marian Diaz-Oliva, who beat Adriana Gersi 7-5, 6-3.
