Quick thinking earned a University of Utah police officer an award from a campus policing group.

The International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators recognized officer John Thompson on Saturday for an arrest of an alleged drug dealer who brandished a gun at the officers trying to take him into custody in February 2000.

Thompson immediately realized the man had a gun and fired his gun first, a University of Utah statement said. The man sustained minor injuries and was later convicted in U.S. District Court on weapons charges, the statement said.

Thompson was one of three honored Saturday, the statement said. U. police officers believe Thompson's actions may have saved their lives, the statement said.

Thompson received an award for the same incident from the Utah Peace Officers Association last year, the statement said.
