Venice Farnsworth Griggs passed away on Sunday, July 1, 2001, at the age of 91.
She was born June 10, 1910, in Beaver, Utah, to Franklin Dennis Farnsworth, and Mildred Skinner Farnsworth. Her mother died in October 1919. Her father remarried to Venola Whitehead. She is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Venice married George Elmer Griggs, July 27, 1932, Brigham City, Utah. They were the parents of three children, Venice Joan, Sharon Rose, and Robert Brent Griggs.
They built a home in South Salt Lake, where Venice lived for over 60 years.
George preceded her in death June 1, 1948. She never remarried.
She retired from employment with the State of Utah, Division of Social Services. She had also worked as a cashier at Hygeia Iceland for many years, and was a member of the Salt Lake Ice Skating Club. Earlier, she had done volunteer work as a switchboard operator for the American Red Cross. She had a keen interest in health and was politically active, especially in promoting or defeating issues related to health.
She loved to dance and was active in square dancing from about 1950 to 1990. She danced with the Swingin' Singles, Rocketeers and later helped organize the Pair-a-Dice Squares. She danced at several national square dance conventions, including one in Canada and Alaska. In her later years she enjoyed line dancing. She attended activities at the Heritage Hall and High Rise Senior Citizen Centers.
Venice is survived by daughters: V. Joan Rushton-Carlson (Russ Carlson) and Sharon (Bowen) Stewart (Wendall P. Stewart) and son, R. Brent Griggs (Peggy Green Griggs). Grandchildren: Kevin and Troy Rushton, Tari Rushton Jensen, Brad, J. Bart, and Carlton Bowen, Shalair Bowen Jones, Todd Griggs and Kari Griggs Spigarelli, and 17 great-grandchildren. Farnsworth brothers: F. Dennis, Jr., Paul Max, John Oris, Lawrence,
Harold, and LeRoy. Sisters: Doraine Williams, Beth Sackett, Noleen Jessup, Faye Tholen, Elaine Bettridge, and G. Lynn Price, and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express special thanks to Dr. Ray Price, Dr. Larry Patten, and Dr. Rachel Stubbs; as well as the Crosslands Rehabilitation & Care Center staff for their tender loving care.
A viewing will be held 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, July 5, 2001, prior to the services. The funeral is scheduled for 2 p.m., located at Larkin Mortuary, 2350 East 1300 South, SLC, UT. Interment Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
