SHARE Assault on deputy adds 8 years to sentence

A Salt Lake man already serving more than 18 years in federal prison for armed bank robbery was given an additional eight years in prison for assaulting a Salt Lake County deputy sheriff last November. At the time, Mesa Rith, 24, was incarcerated at the Salt Lake County Adult Detention Center.

Rith pleaded guilty in March to assaulting the officer. At the time Rith was awaiting sentencing after a jury convicted him of armed bank robbery and brandishing a firearm during the robbery.

Phoma Xayaso, 25, is serving a 13-year sentence for his part in the heist.
