West Valley City-based Usana Health Sciences Inc. has reported net income of $494,000, or 5 cents per share, for the second quarter of the year. That compares with net income of $416,000, or 4 cents per share, for the same period a year ago — an increase of 18 percent.

The earnings-per-share figure for the quarter matched the Wall Street analyst consensus estimate.

The company said sales totaled $28.6 million in the quarter, down from $31.4 million a year ago.

The company said net income in the first half of the year totaled $965,000, or 10 cents per share, down from nearly $1.8 million, or 18 cents per share, in the prior-year period. Sales in the first half of the year totaled $56.2 million, down from $63.1 million a year earlier.

Usana's chairman, Dr. Myron Wentz, said third-quarter sales should show "modest progress," but the launch of operations in Japan in the fourth quarter should start a period of increased sales.

Usana develops and manufactures nutritionals, personal care and weight-management products.
