July 24 races offer some new twists

SHARE July 24 races offer some new twists

There are a lot of ways to enjoy the Deseret News/Granite Furniture marathon, 10K and 5K races this year — individually or collectively as a family or group of employees.

When the gun sounds on all three events July 24, runners and 5K fitness walkers will take to the courses en route to the finishing line at Liberty Park, but how they get there can be as varied as how fast they arrive.

This year, Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation has added a corporate division where companies can enter runners or walkers in any of three events as a team. Lauren Jacobsen is the coordinator of the races for Salt Lake County, and she says this year's competitions will definitely have a team flavor.

Jacobsen has also added a Salt Lake County Challenge Division, where teams of college students, high school students, families or friends can enter. A minimum of three runners per team are needed, and the team with the best cumulative time will win a trophy.

As always, Jacobsen and race director Scott Kerr from Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation will make the races enjoyable and safe. Aid stations are set up all along the courses to help with water and first aid needs.

Registration continues through July 13 at all four Granite Furniture locations along the Wasatch Front, at the Deseret News or at Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation in the Redwood Recreation Center. You can also register online at www.desnews.com/run. There is no race day registration this year.
