LYNNPORT, Pa. (AP) — Police shot and killed a minister dressed as a ninja Wednesday after an extended standoff that began when they tried to take him to a mental hospital.
State police said the Rev. Robert W. Furler, 44, had leveled a gun at a trooper outside his home just before the officer killed him before dawn Wednesday. They said he was carrying two semiautomatic weapons, a long-barreled shotgun and a sword.
Furler was a former Lutheran minister who had recently started his own congregation, the Christ Our Refuge Church. It was not immediately clear why officers were trying to put him in a mental hospital.
State police Capt. Theodore Kohuth said the shooting was justified.
