Janie Thompson, former director of Brigham Young University's entertainment organization, will be honored Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Knight-Mangum Social Hall.

Thompson, 80, who started BYU's Lamanite Generation and others music groups that served as the forerunners to the university's Young Ambassadors and Living Legends, started working at the LDS Church school in 1952.

She previously had performed with the Ike Carpenter Band in New York, Hollywood, Calif., and Europe. She also performed with Tony Bennett.

Spanish Fork

The preliminary plat for Northeast Park, the new site for manufactured houses from the condemned Spanish Fork Ranch, received approval Tuesday from the City Council.

However, Hearthstone Development will be able to work on only 170 lots of the 246 approved because of a moratorium on new lots. Spanish Fork has reached utility capacity with new development.

Hearthstone received the 170 lots from Spanish Fork Ranch, which was built on a reclaimed landfill and has been condemned because of leaking methane gas and resurfacing garbage.

Only 10 manufactured homes will be moved into the new Northeast Park community, officials said. The new community is on 28.02 acres at 1200 North on U-51.

Woodland Hills

The new owner of more than 550 acres now in litigation won't be able to get building permits until the lawsuit is resolved, the City Council said Wednesday.

Developer Don Mecham said he concurs that the issues should be resolved, but says he may want out of the purchase. Mecham said he didn't anticipate getting caught in the middle of a lawsuit when he bought the acreage from Darrell and Dan Bushnell.

The Bushnells filed an intent to sue letter with the city over requirements they say weren't in the original development agreement. The city responded by filing a suit against the brothers alleging failure to comply with city rules, city recorder Beth Wilding said.

The sales price of the land, of which only about 235 acres is buildable because of steep terrain, was not revealed, but Mecham, a city councilman in neighboring Elk Ridge, said he paid a "sizeable" down payment. "If my (building) rights are pending, maybe the note should be pending," he said. "It's hard to spend money on land I can't use."

Utah County

Utah County commissioners have set the county's annual surplus auction for Sept. 22 at 9 a.m. at the Public Works Complex, 2855 South State.

Lists of the surplus items that will go on sale will be available shortly, the commissioners said Tuesday.
