Salt Lake police have arrested a man they believe was involved in a fatal stabbing over the weekend.
The 23-year-old man was arrested Thursday at a Salt Lake County residence as a parole fugitive, police said. He was on parole for previous convictions of theft and burglary, said Brent Butcher, Adult Probation and Parole assistant regional administrator. The man's sentence was set to expire Feb. 11, 2002, according to Butcher.
The man was taken to the Utah State Prison following his arrest.
Detectives expected to interview the man sometime Friday, Salt Lake police detective Dwayne Baird said.
José Daniel Rivera, 24, was stabbed in the chest about 2 a.m. Sunday after an altercation at a party at 158 E. Wilson Ave. (1750 South). Rivera was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.
The fight apparently started when two men and a woman tried to enter the party but were told to leave. An argument ensued, turning into a fight in which Rivera was stabbed.
It's still unknown how many times Rivera was stabbed. Police have not located the murder weapon, either.
Police have ruled out gang connections but are unsure of an exact motive for the stabbing.
