WEST JORDAN — Fire ripped through a house here early Tuesday causing extensive damage.

Crews were called to the split-entry home, 4880 W. Calyx Circle (6850 South), just before 7 a.m. A woman said she smelled smoke coming from her garage.

When the woman went to investigate the smell, she found a fire in the garage, West Jordan Battalion Chief Reed Scharman said. The woman opened the garage door to try to get the smoke out, but the fresh air only added oxygen into the fire, Scharman said.

The fire shot up the front of the house and into the bedroom and attic. As of press time, Scharman did not have a dollar estimate of the damage but said it was extensive.

The woman and her two sons, ages 3 and 4, and the family dog were all able to get out safely.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, but Scharman said it was not suspicious.
