LEGION CHAMPION: The Danville, Calif., Hoots earned the right to defend their American Legion World Series title with a 6-5 victory over Colorado Tuesday in the Western Regional finals, advancing to the Legion World Series that begins this week in Yakima, Wash.

The Hoots trailed 5-4 in the middle of the seventh Monday before the game was suspended due to rain. The California (48-12) scored a run in the seventh and the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.

Noah Albers led the Hoots with three hits and two RBIs.

LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES: The "Baby Bombers" are moving on.

Rolando Torres threw a four-hitter as the Rolando Paulino team from the Bronx, N.Y., secured a spot in the Little League World Series U.S. semifinals with a 5-0 victory over Bainbridge Island, Wash.

Torres struck out four and the defense behind him was flawless, making diving catches and ending the game with a double play. The win clinched first place in Pool B for the Bronx (3-0) and a spot in Thursday night's semifinal against Oceanside, Calif. Bill Blankenship hit two of the four home runs by Apopka and the Florida team overcame a 3-0 deficit for a 10-3 victory over Davenport (Iowa) East.

PILOT PEN: Venus Williams stopped her match with Sandrine Testud for a three-minute medical timeout, then served two aces on the way to a 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory in the Pilot Pen Tennis Tournament.

In another second-round match, Amelie Mauresmo took Henrieta Nagyova to the longest tiebreaker on the tour this year in a 7-6 (14), 6-3 victory.

Fourth-seeded Kim Clijsters, a finalist at the French Open, beat Aranxta Sanchez Vicario 6-1, 6-4, rallying from a 1-4 deficit in the second set.
