UGA SENIOR AM: Brent Tidwell, of Oakridge CC, shot a 4-under-par 68 in the first round of the UGA Senior Amateur Wednesday at Rose Park GC, to take a two-shot lead over Doug Marriott of Riverside CC going into Thursday's final round. Dennis Wood, of Old Mill GC, is three shots back at 71, followed by John Esterbrook, John Taylor, Allen Simkins and Dave Edmonds at even par.
Lou Slama, of Hidden Valley CC, leads the 75-and-over age division after shooting a 75, one better than his age of 76.
The 60-64 age group is led by defending champion Mel Roberts and former BYU women's golf coach, GaryHoward at 74. GlenHatch leads the 65-69 age division with a 73, while BobRodee leads the 70-74 age division with an 81.
UGA MATCH PLAY: Defending champion Carrie Summerhays will meet 16-year-old Rachel Newren in the finals of the UGA Match Play Tournament at Hidden Valley Country Club Thursday.
Summerhays, who will be a senior at BYU, defeated former State Amateur champion Tenille Howe 2 and 1 Wednesday, while Newren beat BYU women's golf coach Sue Nyhus 6 and 4. In the quarterfinals, Summerhays disposed of Ogden's Tori Fishburn 5 and 3, while Newren defeated Park City's Julie McMullin 2 and 1.
