As an outsider to the politics of your community, I am appalled that you people of Salt Lake City have elected such a radical mayor. I've watched him support almost everything that is offensive, vile or just plain objectionable. When the police had to call him to come to Liberty Park to keep them from being killed by the "drummers and druggies," I couldn't help noticing while watching TV reports that the people were on a first-name basis with him. They were actually asking his advice on how to beat the system. He, fortunately, was very cautious in telling them to transfer their concerns to the Legislature.
I watched while he tried to reverse the improvement that came with a ban on "dragging" Main or State streets, for the "freedom of choice" of the offenders. My husband and I have stayed in motels on 600 South and have been afraid for our very lives if we venture out after dusk.
Now I read that Mayor "Anti-establishment" is trying to revitalize the downtown area with taverns to "liven up" the area. I am appalled.
As a former public health nurse, I want you to know that this really is a public health issue. You should be concerned.
Do you really want your community to become as northern Idaho: a place for anti-establishment, misfits, radicals and druggies? You are well on your way.
I watched San Francisco, my hometown, "go by the wayside" as it first embraced the Haight-Asbury district as a tourist attract to "liven up the place." Now I am ashamed to call it my hometown.
