WHITEHALL, Ohio (AP) — A police officer was shot to death and his partner was wounded as they tried to serve a summons against a man who had been arrested hours earlier on a drunken driving charge, authorities said.
Bela Mozer was arrested Friday afternoon after leaving the scene of an accident, Lt. Richard Zitzke said.
Two hours later, Officer Terry McDowell, 35, was shot to death and his partner was wounded when they went to Mozer's duplex to issue a ticket to Mozer's wife. She had driven to the jail to bail out her husband but did not have a license, Zitzke said.
When the officers arrived, Bela Mozer shot through the front screen door, hitting McDowell, then went outside and fired at Brill. McDowell was killed, and Brill was listed in stable condition, said police spokesman Bob Roule.
