MOAB — A kayak accident on the Colorado River claimed the life of a Salt Lake man Saturday.

Killed was:

Bennie R. Hicks, 56.

Hicks and his wife, Martha, were traveling through White Ranch Rapids near Moab on the Colorado River in an inflatable double kayak when he fell out just before 1 p.m., according to the Grand County Sheriff's Office.

Bennie Hicks yelled for help and was pulled from the river by nearby rafters. Hicks quit breathing and the rafters began CPR, which continued until emergency vehicles arrived, the sheriff's office said. He was transported to Allen Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
