KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Minnesota Twins parlayed four walks and five stolen bases into a five-run fifth inning Sunday, helping Brad Radke beat the Kansas City Royals 7-2.
The Twins, which had lost 10 of 14 going into the series, completed a three-game sweep. Kansas City lost its sixth in a row, all at home.
Radke (11-8), who had lost his four previous decisions, pitched three-hit ball for seven innings. He struck out five and walked none.
Blake Stein (5-7) allowed two hits through four scoreless innings before walking David Ortiz to start the fifth.
Before the inning was over, Ortiz, Luis Rivas, Cristian Guzman, Koskie and Torii Hunter all stole bases — just one short of the team record for a game.
Corey Koskie hit a two-run single and Guzman, Hunter and A.J. Pierzynski also had RBI singles.
During the Royals' six-game slide, all at home, the Royals starters have a 6.89 ERA.
Mark Quinn was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on Dave McCarty's sacrifice fly in the fifth and Carlos Beltran had an RBI single for the Royals in the sixth.
The Twins added two in the eighth when Denny Hocking scored on Jason Grimsley's wild pitch and Brian Buchanan doubled and eventually scored on Luis Rivas' fielder's choice.
It was the Twins' first three-game sweep in Kansas City since Aug. 6-8, 1999.
Stein gave up five runs on six hits and four walks in 4 2/3 innings. He had six strikeouts.
Ortiz was thrown out after arguing a called third strike that ended the fifth.
WHITE SOX 3, DEVIL RAYS 2: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Jose Canseco and Magglio Ordonez hit solo homers.
Canseco, who had three RBIs in Chicago's 8-4 win over Tampa Bay Saturday, broke a 2-all tie in the sixth against Bobby Seay (0-1) with his 12th homer this season, the 458th of his career.
Jon Garland (6-4) allowed two runs and six hits in 6 1-3 innings, and Keith Foulke got three outs for his 35th save.
INDIANS 4, MARINERS 3: At Seattle, Kenny Lofton hit a two-out, two-run single off Arthur Rhodes in the ninth inning that led the Cleveland Indians over the Seattle Mariners.
Rhodes, ejected Saturday when he got angry after being ordered by umpires to remove his earrings, relieved with the bases loaded and two outs. He relieved after Cleveland loaded the bases against Jeff Nelson (4-2) and reacted calmly when told to remove the earrings by second-base umpire Tim McClelland.
The Mariners, who had won five in a row, loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth. But Ichiro Suzuki grounded into a force play at the plate — ending his 21-game hitting streak — and Mark McLemore grounded out against Bob Wickman, who got his 24th save.
BLUE JAYS 5, ORIOLES 1: At Baltimore, Rookie Brandon Lyon (3-2) pitched six innings of three-hit ball as Toronto completed a three-game sweep, outscoring the Orioles 19-1.
Melvin Mora's sixth-inning homer ended Toronto's 26-inning scoreless streak, one short of the team record.
Vernon Wells, recalled from Triple-A Syracuse earlier in the day, had three hits. Jose Mercedes (7-15) allowed five runs and six hits in six innings.
ATHLETICS 7, TIGERS 6: At Oakland, Calif., Miguel Tejada drove in three runs, and Terrence Long hit a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning as the Oakland Athletics overcame a five-run deficit to beat the Detroit Tigers.
Tejada hit a two-run homer, a run-scoring double and a single while Jason Giambi added his 31st homer. The A's closed their mediocre homestand with a come-from-behind victory.
Oakland lost three of four to Cleveland earlier this week, then needed two rallies on Sunday to beat the lowly Tigers. The A's still maintained a lead over Boston in the AL wild card standings throughout the week.
