The Boston Red Sox couldn't have had a more encouraging loss.

Pedro Martinez returned to the mound for the first time in two months Sunday night, but Boston lost 5-4 to the Texas Rangers.

Martinez, on a 60-75 pitch count as he recovers from a sore right shoulder, left after four innings with the score tied at 3.

"I feel good. My arm reacted good," Martinez said after throwing 71 pitches in four innings. "I got my work done and I was back on the mound. The rest is overrated."

In his first start since June 26, the three-time Cy Young Award winner allowed three runs — two earned — and six hits. He threw mostly fastballs and changeups for 51 strikes.

Tim Wakefield (8-10) relieved Martinez to start the fifth. Mike Lamb hit a tiebreaking two-run single for the Rangers in the sixth.

Bill Haselman singled, Michael Young was hit by a pitch and Boston catcher Doug Mirabelli was charged with a passed ball before Lamb singled to left.

The Rangers built a 3-0 lead against Martinez, who struck out four and walked one.

ANGELS 7, YANKEES 6 (10): Garret Anderson hit a run-scoring double in the 10th inning to give Anaheim a come-from-behind victory over visiting New York.

Anderson's game-winning drive down the right-field line off Mike Stanton (8-4) came after Stanton hit Darin Erstad with a pitch to start the inning.

David Eckstein's two-out, run-scoring single off Mariano Rivera in the ninth tied it at 6 and denied Orlando Hernandez his first win of 2001.

The blown save was the sixth in 46 chances for Rivera. He gave up one run and three hits in 1 1/3 inning.

INDIANS 4, MARINERS 3: Kenny Lofton hit a two-out, two-run single off Arthur Rhodes in the ninth after visiting Cleveland loaded the bases off Jeff Nelson (4-2).

Rhodes, ejected Saturday when he got angry after being ordered by umpires to remove his earrings, relieved with the bases loaded and two outs. He reacted calmly when told to remove the earrings by second-base umpire Tim McClelland.

Seattle, which had won five in a row, loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth. But Ichiro Suzuki grounded into a force play at the plate — ending his 21-game hitting streak — and Mark McLemore grounded out against Bob Wickman, who got his 24th save.

ATHLETICS 7, TIGERS 6: Miguel Tejada drove in three runs, and Terrence Long hit a tiebreaking single in the seventh as Oakland overcame a 5-0 deficit against visiting Detroit.

Matt Perisho (2-3) walked Olmedo Saenz and hit Jason Giambi with a pitch in the seventh and Jermaine Dye singled home the tying run.

TWINS 7, ROYALS 2: Visiting Minnesota parlayed four walks and five stolen bases into a five-run fifth. The Twins, who had lost 10 of 14 going into the series, completed a three-game sweep and sent Kansas City to its sixth straight loss — all at home.

Brad Radke (11-8), who had lost his four previous decisions, pitched three-hit ball for seven innings to beat Blake Stein (5-7), who gave up five runs on six hits and four walks in 4 2/3 innings. The Twins remained 4 1/2 games back in the AL Central.
