SCORE: BYU 70, Tulane 35
RECORD: 1-0
NEXT UP: Nevada (7 p.m., LaVell Edwards Stadium; Ch. 5)
OFFENSE: Suddenly, the 70s are fashionable again in Provo. BYU hung 70 points and 734 yards of total offense on Tulane. Quarterback Brandon Doman threw for three touchdowns and ran for another. It was as close to perfect offensive execution in Provo in a long, long time. GRADE: A
DEFENSE: The Cougars have some room to improve here. They surrendered 508 yards, and 279 of those came in the first quarter alone. BYU's defensive secondary was, like last season, vulnerable at times. Overall, the Cougars' front seven was solid. GRADE: C+
SPECIAL TEAMS: Freshman placekicker Matt Payne tied a school record for most PATs in a game (10) in his debut. Punter Aaron Edmonds only punted twice, and one was a 50-yarder that pinned Tulane inside its own six yard line. Mike Rigell shined on kick-return duty, racking up 174 yards, including a 45-yard punt return and a 33-yard kickoff return. GRADE: A-
