A Salt Lake County pursuit turned hairy for sheriff's deputies when a passenger in an evading car fired a gun at them, a spokeswoman for the department said.

About 3:45 a.m. Sunday, deputies pulled over a car near 4500 South and 700 East, deputy Peggy Faulkner said. The driver and passenger in the car apparently gave deputies false identification and while dispatch searched for information, the car sped off.

Sheriff's deputies followed and the passenger fired several shots at the pursuing deputies, Faulkner said.

The chase lasted about 10 minutes, and then the evading car's tires were spiked by the Utah Highway Patrol near Redwood Road and California Avenue, Faulkner said.

The vehicle stopped and the driver and passenger ran, Faulkner said. Deputies found the 21-year-old passenger, but the driver is still at large.

Investigators hope to obtain a search warrant of the car to glean more information on the chase and gun, Faulkner said.
