Four people died in three separate crashes on Utah roadways since Saturday.
Killed were:
John F. Houston, 50, Las Vegas.
Darla Marie Redd, 20, Monticello.
Brad Carlisle, 41, Scipio.
Judith Carlisle, 17, Scipio.
Another motorist was taken to the hospital Monday in critical condition after his van rear-ended a semitrailer on the west side of Parley's Summit about 10 a.m. Traffic traveling west on I-80 was shut down for about one hour while the wreckage was removed.
Monday morning's crash came 24 hours after a rollover accident on I-15 south of Beaver claimed Houston's life. Houston, his daughter and a 51-year-old man were on their way to Logan from Las Vegas when the vehicle drifted off the freeway, ran into a median and rolled several times. Investigators are not sure what caused the car to drift. All three were wearing seat belts, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Doug McCleve said.
Redd was killed Saturday about 3:40 p.m. on U-6, 15 miles east of Wellington. She was driving east when, for an unknown reason, her car drifted off the road. Redd overcorrected back onto the roadway and then went off the road again, rolling several times. Redd was wearing a seat belt but was pronounced dead at the scene, McCleve said.
The weekend's first two fatalities happened Saturday at 5:51 a.m. along I-15 five miles south of Nephi. Carlisle, his wife, 17-year-old daughter and two sons, 11 and 9, were inside a pickup truck pulling a trailer of hay, McCleve said.
The trailer became unhitched, causing the truck to lose control.
The truck and trailer both rolled, ejecting Brad and Judith Carlisle. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Carlisle's wife, who was driving the truck, was the only person wearing a seat belt, McCleve said. Both boys were treated and released at the scene. Investigators are looking into whether the hitch's ball was the right size for the trailer, McCleve said.
