Not so unusual

A recent Associated Press article profiled the bizarre training regimen of top-level South Korean archers.

Among the requirements: staring at dead bodies in a crematory all night, cleaning up city sewage, swimming in the ocean until their body temperatures dropped and dragging a 176-pound boat up a mountain.

Other times they handled snakes and visited haunted houses manned by actors in spooky costumes.

So why is that a big story?

Sounds like just another Rick Majerus practice to me.

Tuning up

Most everyone in Utah knows the famous country group SheDaisy is from Magna.

What you didn't know is that little brother Clayton Osborn is headed to Nashville, too.

But he's not going there to sing — at least as far we know. He plans to attend Liscomb University on a basketball scholarship.

Did he choose Nashville so he could be by his sisters?

Probably not. I figure it's just because all the basketball scholarships in Branson were taken.

Surprise guests

You've gotta believe Osborn's basketball future at Liscomb is bright. At the very least, he has an inside track on getting someone to sing the national anthem.

Back on track

It's been a rough summer for Tiger Woods, but perhaps even rougher for the TV networks.

That's because when Woods is in a slump, so are the ratings.

This year's British Open — in which Woods finished 25th — had ratings 39 percent lower than last year.

Final-day ratings at the U.S. Open were 11 percent below the previous year. That's because Tiger finished a disappointing 12th.

On Sunday, Woods finally got back to winning.

I hope the networks are happy. But I'm ticked.

I was just starting to develop an interest in Briny Baird.

Same name, different address

Maybe they just didn't understand him in Provo.

Norm Chow, longtime BYU assistant coach, left after the 1999 season to coach at North Carolina State. Now he's at Southern Cal, where coach Pete Carroll recently said Chow might be the greatest offensive coordinator in college football history.

Wait a minute. Are we talking about the same guy who had more detractors in Provo than Marilyn Manson?

I guess we won't know if it's the same Norm until the fans start booing the quarterbacks and complaining about the play-calling.

Regular Joe

Help me. I'm confused.

Once upon a time, there was a Brighton High football star named Reno Mahe.

But when he moved on to BYU, he changed his name to "Junior" Mahe.

Next, he transferred to Dixie State and back. Somewhere along the way he changed his name back to Reno.

By the way, the BYU media guide notes that his first given name is Sateki.

I'm not one to butt in on other people's business, but in this case, maybe it would have been simpler for his parents to have just named him Joe.
