TROY, Mich. — Kmart Corp. is testing an updated mobile version of its blue-light special that allows store managers to take the recently revived promotional tool anywhere in the store.

The roaming cart is designed to complement Kmart's stationary blue-light displays, which were introduced in April and are found near the middle of each store.

"This is the next evolution of the blue-light program," Dave Karraker, a spokesman for the Troy-based discount chain, told The Detroit News.

The nation's third-largest retailer had used the flashing blue light, created in 1965 and abandoned in 1991, to direct customers to unadvertised sales.

Karraker said the new moving displays are being tested in a number of markets — he declined to say which ones — and could be introduced nationwide.
