KEARNS — The Kearns Oquirrh Park Fitness Center Board of Trustees is offering a reward of $500 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for vandalizing trees near the Utah Olympic Oval.

In two separate incidents, one or more vandals broke in half nine trees in a new 8-acre park next to the indoor oval. This past spring hundreds of volunteers planted about 80 trees in the park. For 30 years prior, it was nothing but a weed field.

"The community really took part in getting this going," said board president Doral Vance. "I just think we need to send the message, 'This is our park . . . and we want to keep it nice.' " The trees probably will be replaced.

Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to call the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office.
