CROSS COUNTRY: The University of Utah men's cross country team finished third and the women's team placed fourth at the ISU Invitational on Saturday in Pocatello, Idaho. The Ute men scored 58 points, finishing behind Utah State (39) and Weber State (55) and ahead of Idaho State (60). The Ute women scored 74 points to bring up the rear of its four-team field. Weber State was first for the women (26), followed by Utah State (52) and ISU (59). Teren Jameson finished first (19:34) for the men, and Colby Frazier finished eighth (20:21). For the women, Elise Greenwood finished fifth (11:53). Tara Hall (17th, 12:24) was Utah's only other top 20 woman finisher.

VOLLEYBALL: The No. 21-ranked Ute women's volleyball team went undefeated in its own Utah Classic Tournament this weekend. The Utes defeated the Texas Tech Red Raiders in four games, 30-15, 23-30, 30-28, 30-24, at Crimson Court on Saturday. Utah improves to 3-0. Texas Tech falls to 1-2 on the season.

Senior Alisa Geddes led the Utes with her second double-double of the season. She racked up a season-best 18 kills for a .317 hitting percentage, 13 digs and two total blocks. Geddes took charge offensively as she notched 20.0 points in the match. Junior Sylva Strzinkova had her first double-double of her career and posted 11 kills, 13 digs and racked up 12.5 points in the match. Senior McKelle Stilson added 10 kills and five blocks, while junior Katrena Ellett totaled eight kills and five blocks. Sophomore Kim Turner racked up seven kills, 10 total blocks and was responsible for 13.0 of Utah's 82.0 points. As a team Utah posted a .301 hitting percentage and 17.0 team blocks.

For the Red Raiders, Melissa McGehee totaled 17 kills and nine digs. Yolanda Cumbess notched 14 kills, while teammate Skydra Orzen totaled 50 assists and 10 digs. Texas Tech hit for just .098, adding 4.0 total team blocks.

"I was really happy the way our team responded to how aggressive they (Texas Tech) were," said Ute coach Beth Launiere. "It was a real test for us, and we competed harder and came together."

Utah had three players selected to the Utah Classic all-Tournament team. They were Alisa Geddes, Sylva Strzinkova and tournament MVP Kim Turner.

Utah State

CROSS COUNTRY: Utah State's men's cross country team finished in first place with a score of 39 in the Idaho State Invitational held in Pocatello, Idaho. The women finished in fourth place with a score of 79.

Leading the men was senior Steve Prescott who placed second with a time of 19:49. Senior Mitch Zundel also finished in the top-five with a fourth place finish with a time of 20:09.

Other top 10 finishers were senior Brick Bergeson with a ninth place finish and a time of 20:35 and freshman Mike Nielson with a 10th place finish and a time 20:39.

On the women's side senior Shae Messersmith led the way with a sixth place finish and a time of 11:54. Followed by sophomore Christi Howell with a seventh place finish and a time of 11:59.

The other top 10 finisher was senior Melanie McClellan with a 10th place finish and a time of 12:05.

SOCCER: Utah State's women's soccer team lost to the University of Washington 4-1 on Saturday. The loss brings the Aggies' season record to 0-2.

Southern Utah

CROSS COUNTRY: Southern Utah's men's and women's cross country teams each finished second at the Northern Arizona/George Kyte Invitational Saturday in Flagstaff, Ariz. The T-Bird men placed two runners in the top 10 to score 44 points behind NAU's winning score of 17, while the women's team recorded three top 10 finishes to score 46 points behind the Lumberjacks winning score of 25.

Utah Valley State

VOLLEYBALL: Utah Valley State College staged a tremendous comeback to edge defending national champion College of Southern Idaho 26-30, 22-30, 30-28, 30-25, 15-12 Saturday, claiming the title in the UVSC Women's Volleyball Invitational.
