Gunnar V. Tammisto, 87, passed away peacefully Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001 of multiple strokes in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Gunnar was born March 22, 1914 in Teuva, Finland to Juho Vihtori and Maria Hoikkala Tammisto, fourth of nine children. On Dec. 26, 1940, he married Aili Tapanainen. They along with their two daughters joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Finland on May 25, 1958. Their marriage was solemnized in Bern, Switzerland Temple in 1960.

He was active in the church serving in various capacities including as Branch President of two branches simultaneously. He served a mission with his wife in Finland in 1981.

He was reared and educated in Teuva and Tampere, Finland. He worked for the Finnish Government Telephone as an Area Executive. He served Finland in World War II and Winter War.

Gunnar is survived by his wife, Aili and two daughters, Heli (William N.) Hunsaker and Raila (Joseph) Leavitt. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Grandchildren are: Denise Zaidman, Aaron and Jasan Brackney, Ari, Kari and William V. Hunsaker, Kristi Linford, Kaija Sponaugle and Anneli Brandt. Great-grandchildren are: Mireille Zaidman, Spencer, Arielle, Calvin, Savannah and Ian Hunsaker, Kaycee Wharton, Kara and Rendon Linford, Aubrey and Gillian Sponaugle, Jade and River Brandt. He is also survived by three brothers: Reino, Leevi and Niilo Tammisto and two sisters: Aino Laitila and Rauha Rinta-Runsala, all of Finland.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Viljo and Matti Tammisto and sister Aune Aho.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2001 at 12 noon at the Rosecrest 2nd Ward, 3101 South 2300 East. Friends may call Friday evening, from 7-9 p.m. at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, and at the church on Saturday one hour prior to the services. Interment: Salt Lake City Cemetery.
