SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — State welfare officials bused dozens of homeless Boston families, including two women who had just given birth, 90 miles to Springfield motels without making provisions for their care.

"This just should not have happened to 150 people," Mayor Michael Albano said, calling for a legislative investigation.

Local officials said they weren't notified. "We dropped the ball," said Dick Powers, a spokesman for the state welfare department.
