Jim Lehrer is this year's recipient of the Allen H. Neuharth Award for Excellence in Journalism.
An awards ceremony will be held Oct. 11 at the University of South Dakota at Vermillion. Lehrer, anchor of "The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer" on PBS, will not attend because he's covering developments following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the university said Thursday. But Lehrer will deliver a lecture and answer questions live via a television broadcast from Washington.
The 67-year-old journalist is the 14th recipient of the award named for Neuharth, a 1950 South Dakota graduate and the founder of USA Today. It recognizes lifetime achievement in journalism.
