Dr. Ronald M. Harris has been appointed assistant vice president for diversity at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center.

Harris, who received his medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco, also serves as an assistant professor of dermatology and adjunct assistant professor of pathology at the U. School of Medicine.

Among his assignments will be enhancing recruitment, retention and advancement of faculty, staff and students from underrepresented populations. He'll also maintain outreach and liaison programs with the state's minority and ethnic communities help see that patients in the hospitals and clinics receive "culturally competent" care.

Besides his medical training, Harris has a master of business administration degree from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. He received his bachelor's degree in biochemistry/biophysics from the University of California, Davis.
