Davis High tuned up for next weekend's Great American Race Festival in Charlotte, N.C., with two convincing victories at Saturday's Cottonwood High Invitational cross country meet.
The Darts won both boys' and girls' team titles, and had the medalists in each race as well. In the aftermath of Tuesday's terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C., teams from the Jordan School District originally scheduled to compete did not, and both Skyline and Granger were no-shows as well.
Davis junior boys Jace Nye and Brad Phippen finished one-two respectively, Nye winning in a time of 12 minutes 42 seconds over the 2.5 mile Cottonwood course. Phippen was five seconds behind, followed in third by Alex Santy of Taylorsville at 12:51, and Cottonwood's Steve Harbertson in fourth at 13:02. Jeremy Knowles of Davis, rounded out the top five at 13:13.
The girls' winner was Lisa Frischknecht of Davis continuing her fine season with a time of 15:37. Teammate Wendy Wilson was second at 15:46, followed by Cheryl Jolley of Cottonwood, third at 15:56; Davis' Allison Passey in fourth at 16:04; and Cottonwood's Michelle Martineau in fifth at 16:21.
The Darts scored scored 21 points in the boys' team race, easily outdistancing Taylorsville at 51 and Cottonwood at 66. The Lady Darts finished with 24 points to beat host Cottonwood with 39 and Taylorsville with 72.
Next weekend,a number of Utah teams, including Davis, will head to the Carolina competition, assuming flight arrangements can still be worked out. Locally, those not running on the East Coast will participate in the annual Wasatch Rendevous races at the Cottonwood Complex on Saturday morning.
