TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — America West Airlines and America West Express introduced a package of sale fares Friday for travel to entice passengers back into the air.

Fares ranging from $39 to $89 each way, based on roundtrip purchase, must be bought by Oct. 11 and used by Jan. 11. The flights require a three-day advance purchase and minimum one-night stay, with a maximum stay of 30 days.

Seats are limited, and there are 10 blackout dates in November, December and through New Year's Day.

The sales were announced in response to President Bush's appeal to Americans to resume flying and to help restore a sense of normalcy in the wake of four terrorist hijackings Sept. 11.

Two of the hijacked planes plowed into the World Trade Center towers. A third slammed into the Pentagon, and a fourth crashed in Pennsylvania. The attacks triggered huge financial losses on the nation's airlines, requiring a congressional bailout, and many citizens have been reluctant to fly for safety reasons.

Southwest Airlines has announced similar fare reductions on sale through Oct. 11, while Northwest Airlines has extended indefinitely a sale that was to end Sept. 14.
