PROVO — Utah retained possession of the coveted Arizona-Utah Shootout crystal trophy by defeating Arizona 43-29 at Riverside Country Club.
It was the third straight win for Utah and increased its lead in the golf series to 7-4.
The Utah side jumped to a commanding lead Friday morning in the foursome segment with a 14-4 edge and then managed a 9-9 tie in the four-ball segment to take a 10-point lead after one day.
On Saturday the Utah contingent widened its lead by winning the individual matches by a score of 20-16, for a 43-29 triumph.
"It was one of our best teams ever," said Utah captain Arlen Peacock, "and our players were very comfortable . . . "
Kurt Jamison won all but a half-point of his possible points, and Ryan Job won all but one point to lead the Utah team in scoring. Doug Bybee and Steve Poulson teamed to win all but a half-point in foursomes and four-ball, and then Poulson won his individual match, 2-1, and Bybee gained a tie against Arizona's strongest player, Bob Munoz.
