VOLLEYBALL: Thanks to a .533 hitting percentage in the decisive fifth game, 16th-ranked BYU defeated No. 23 Colorado, 33-35, 30-26, 26-30, 30-27, 15-10, in the opening match of the Mizuno Classic. The Cougars improved to 4-1 with the win in front of 1,537 fans at the Smith Fieldhouse. The Buffaloes dropped their first match of the year, falling to 3-1.

Karina Pulkkonen had 10 kills, breaking her previous career high of nine, while also hitting a blistering .529 attack percentage to lead BYU. Senior middle blocker Jackie Bundy came up big in the final three games while recording her first career triple-double with 15 kills, 12 digs and 10 blocks. All-American senior middle blocker Nina Puikkonen led the Cougars with 19 kills and passed former Cougar All-American Gale Johnson's 1,340 kills to move into fifth place on BYU's career kills list. Sunny Mahe added 11 kills for BYU while Uila Crabbe had a match-high 13 digs.


VOLLEYBALL: The No. 19 ranked University of Utah women's volleyball team lost to the No. 5 ranked Arizona Wildcats in three games, 30-24, 30-22, 30-22 at the McKale Center in Tucson, Ariz., on Thursday Utah moves to 3-1 overall, 0-0 in the MWC. Arizona improves to 4-0 on the season.

Senior Adrianne Bradley-Drake led the team with 10 kills, four digs and five total blocks. Sophomore Kim Turner racked up nine kills for a .471 hitting percentage and four total blocks.

Utah State

VOLLEYBALL: Utah State's women's volleyball team dropped to 2-2 on the season with a three-game loss to No. 10 Hawaii at the Seventh Annual Aston Imua Wahine Volleyball Classic in Honolulu by scores of 30-23, 30-12, 30-18. The Aggies hit .205 in the opening game but couldn't stop the Rainbow Wahine offense as UH hit .412. USU had a negative hitting percentage in game two (-.023), and hit just .045 in game three en route to the loss.


TRACK AND FIELD: Southern Utah University's men's and women's cross country teams run back into action Saturday at the UC Irvine Invitational.

Both T-Bird teams finished second at the Northern Arizona/George Kyte Invitational last Saturday in Flagstaff, Ariz.


VOLLEYBALL: Utah Valley State College opened Scenic West Athletic Conference volleyball play with a 30-24, 30-16, 30-24 win over North Idaho College Thursday. The UVSC women improved to 18-1 on the year with the win. Liana Bortoto led the Wolverine attack with 15 kills. She also had 13 digs. Fran Pozzi added 13 kills and nine digs. Mandi Kiholm and Melissa had five kills apiece. Setter Aulani Rogers had 34 assists.

UVSC will complete a three-match road swing with a game at Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho, on Saturday at 1 p.m.
