Ruth Nelsena Howard Young died September 2, 2001 in Orange, California surrounded by loving family members.
She was born to Lucas William and Irma Kelson Howard, Sept. 17, 1915 in Smithfield, Utah. Her parents soon moved the family to Holladay, where Ruth grew up and later attended Granite High School. As a young girl, she learned to be industrious and always loved to dance. She married Walter J. Rice and they were the parents of three children, Janet, Jerry, and Kathy. They were later divorced, and in 1944 Ruth married Robert P. Young.
In 1953 Bob and Ruth moved to Southern California, where Ruth worked for Sears Roebuck and the Santa Ana Register. In 1976 they returned to the Salt Lake area where they built their own home, living there until Bob's death in 1999 after 54 years of marriage.
Ruth then moved to Orange to live with her daughter Janet.
Ruth was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as a ward librarian and Relief Society teacher. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and a faithful friend to many. She will always be remembered and loved for her constant love and service to others.
Ruth is survived by her daughters, Janet (Glenn) Olive and Kathy (Dick) McFarlane, her brother Shirl (Marian) Howard, nine grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Bob, her son Jerry [Connie] Rice, and her brothers Kelson Howard and Robert Don Howard.
Visitation will be Saturday, 10 a.m. with the funeral to follow at 10:30 a.m. at Cottonwood Mortuary, Holladay. Interment in the Holladay Memorial Park.
