Carolina's Ron Francis has good timing.
His 499th goal was the eventual game-winner for the Hurricanes on Monday, setting up a chance for him to score his 500th goal in his 1,000th game for the Hartford-Carolina franchise on Wednesday at home.
Francis scored twice in the final six minutes, lifting Carolina to a 5-4 win over the Sabres in Buffalo.
"He's genetically superior to most people," Carolina coach Paul Maurice said. "He is an extreme athlete."
Francis, who also recorded his 1,163rd assist, is one goal from becoming the fifth player in NHL history with 500 goals and 1,000 assists.
He would join Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Mark Messier and Marcel Dionne.
"When you start mentioning those names, everything they accomplished, to hear your name mentioned in the same sentence with those guys is obviously something special," Francis said.
