Patricia Ireland, former president of the National Organization for Women, has joined a Florida law firm's Washington office where she will work as a lobbyist and an adviser on equal employment opportunity issues.

A former Miami lawyer who was NOW's president from 1991 until last June, Ireland has become the second attorney at the new Washington office of Katz, Kutter, Haigler, Alderman, Bryant & Yon. The firm is based in Orlando, Tallahassee and the Miami suburb of Aventura.

"This is the best of both worlds. I get to renew my Florida ties and come in on the ground floor to help the firm's Washington D.C., practice," Ireland said in a statement issued Tuesday.

"I can draw on the strong relationships I've built in Congress and I can continue my expertise in equal opportunity laws in ways that are good for business and good for the people these laws are intended to empower," she said.

Ireland, a graduate of the University of Miami's law school, practiced business law and dealt with affirmative action plans and federal contract compliance reviews for 12 years before being elected to office in NOW.
