Behavior, rather than genetics, may be key to reducing a woman's risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Results of the Nurses' Health Study suggest that in about nine out of 10 cases, type 2 diabetes could be prevented by weight loss, regular exercise, healthy diet, not smoking and limiting alcohol intake. The risk reduction was similar for women with and without a family history of the disease, according to the American Heart Association.
